LABELS AS SERVICE COMPANIES...

As the once seemingly fixed roles within our volatile industry continue to change, it's very possible that record labels will evolve into marketing service providers to artists. The concept may have seemed unlikely at the beginning of 2000, but now certain record companies are actually adopting this business model. PIAS, for example, has been offering tailor-made services for 5 years, as have Kobalt Music in the USA,  Sydney, London, Berlin and Stockholm. In France, PBC Music recently launched Your Label, offering artists, managers, producers, and other music associated entrepreneurs a personalised service package appropriate to their aims and needs. We review these facilities which now offer project management and support teams with expertise in areas such as logistics, strategy, promotion, marketing, distribution. What are the advantages and perhaps the limitations? We consider the costs and the potential results.
