MANMAN LAI / EASY DOES IT / DOUCEMENT MAIS SUREMENT: HOW TO DO BUSINESS IN CHINA?

The number one country in terms of population, but only the twenty-first largest music market in the world, China remains a mysterious and unfamiliar  territory for all music professionals  who wish to work or to relocate there. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China, the French Institute, the French Embassy in China and  MaMA will organize a specific forum on the state of the popular music market in China in order to better answer the many questions raised by this subject.

What is the history behind a musical industry that has strong growth, but that is only a few decades old? What are the networks of distribution, the important actors in the industry, in live acts (festivals, promoters), as well as in digital and physical distribution, and in social networks and means of promotion? Where do independent labels fit in respect to the domination of Mandopop? How is the local supply organized? What are the obstacles and specific difficulties encountered by international actors who wish to develop their artists? Finally, how does one master the unique issues of pirating and censorship in China?

For the first time at MaMA, 5 renowned professionals from all different backrounds - chinese or based in china- will be able to answer these questions. Local promoters, producers, label managers, groups and festivals as well as special consultants in terms of copyright and pirating, will give their opinions and share their experiences and advice in respect to the specifics of this unique market.

This conference is organized within the framework of France-Chine 50 with the support of its sponsors and Hainan Airline www.france-chine50.com

International Professional meet ups are organized for the France-China 50, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China, and will be implemented through a joint partnership between the French Institute and MaMA. Around ten
Chinese professionals or those based in China (agents, producers, promotors, festival and venue programmers, labels, etc.) will be invited to participate at MaMA in order to discover the french musical scene and to meet french and international professionals from the popular music sector.
These professionals, who were jointly invited by the French embassy in China, The French Institute, and MaMA, will take part in a speed meeting session.
